Dorking Deanery - A Vision for the Future
The Dorking Deanery Vision Day, held on 21st November, was the starting point for a new direction for the Deanery. As those who were involved will testify, the day itself was an exceptional time, filled with constructive discussion, thoughtful reflection, prayer - and even the dreaming of dreams! Throughout the day, participants were touched by the warmth of Christian fellowship and shared a real willingness to listen to and trust each other. Simple pleasures, including walking together through beautiful woodland and sharing a meal contributed to the thinking, too. As the day progressed, there was a deepening resolve that we – the Dorking Deanery Synod - simply have to break out from the old long-established patterns and develop new directions, rooted in the confidence that there is a valuable role for the Deanery in serving our parishes.
The members of Deanery Synod who participated on the day brought an abundance of ideas and fresh thinking and, since then, a small group of us (Mary Huggins, Clare Truman, Liz Cave and Paul Bryer) has attempted to distil the vision and develop some proposals for the way forward. What is emerging is a radical new way of viewing the future role of Dorking Deanery as a significant and dynamic component of the life of our churches within the Deanery. We want to share the developments with you and, together, contemplate the positive impact we intend that this will have on our parishes and – most importantly of all - for the individual members of our church communities.

A Message From Jimmy, CTD Youthworker
Hi everyone,
Hope you're not too busy in the run up to Christmas (I've heard that it can get a bit busy in churches round about now? not sure why!) Anyway, just wanted to let you know about some stuff coming up under the umbrella of the Churches Together youth stuff...
Firstly though, a big thanks to everyone who was involved or came along to the youth event on 13th Dec at Crossways Baptist Church. It was great to see so many young people from across the churches in the area. Watch out for news of the next event (next term) coming soon...
Secondly, to let you know about Christmas Eve - Carol singing outside Waitrose in Dorking. 2-3pm - we'll provide song words etc and be collecting for charity as well. In previous years St Josephs have done this and had a great response so a big thanks to them for suggesting this as a churches together youthy activity. If you have any musicians as well then get in touch before the event so we can sort out music etc! please do encourage your young people to come along to this and witness to the glory of the birth of Jesus at that first Christmas!
And lastly, but not leastly - you may have heard about the Youth Alpha that has run over the past few years in Dorking for young people in the area, and it's occurring again!
Its happening sunday afternoons 3-5pm at Dorking Christian Centre, from 10th Jan through to the end of March with the weekend away planned for 12th-14th March. This year is focussed on school years 7-8, although if there are yr 9s who it would work for (eg they have all their best friends in the yr7-8 age group etc then its perfectly possible for them to come along...)We have posters and postcards to advertise it which we'll be trying to distribute, but please do ensure that your relevant youth (and parents!) are informed and excited about it!!!
If you're eager eager eager for postcards/poster pop into the christian centre and come along to my office and harrass me until I give you some, or you can always contact me on youth.ctd@gmail.com or 07788 916882.

The Kingdom of God in Surrey
On Wednesday 14th October, we were lucky to be visited by the Very Revd. Victor Stock, Dean of Guildford Cathedral, to talk to us about signs of the Kingdom of God in Surrey.
Victor Stock spoke of his aim to make the Cathedral accessible to everyone through creative events such as holding fairs in the nave and the recent flower gala. He highlighted the signs of grace that are seen 'if you welcome people, especially those who do not expect to be welcomed.' This poses a challenge for us in our churches, are they accessible to everyone? Are there people who do not expect to find a welcome in the churches in our deanery and if so, how can we welcome those people?
He also spoke about the importance of bridging differences between us as we work and worship together. Victor shared powerful examples of the ways in which important relationships have developed between churches and church leaders who think and worship in very different ways. The Church of England is a broad church. What more can we do in the Deanery to strengthen the relationships between our churches?
If you want hear more from Victor Stock you can find a selection of his sermons here.
Finally, don't forget to let Diana know if you will be attending our Deanery Vision Day on Saturday 21st November at Okewood Hill from 9.30am - 2.30pm. A valuable chance to meet together and focus on our vision for Dorking Deanery.

What is a blog?
What on earth is a blog?
The word 'blog' is short for 'weblog'. It is an online diary or webpage where we can record our news and share ideas.
Why do we have one?
Deanery Synod meetings are a fantastic place to get information and share ideas, but often your best idea or burning question doesn't occur to you until you are in the car on the way home or when you are reporting back to your PCC. The blog will enable us to share ideas and questions between meetings. If there is something you want to say, simply find the relevant article and click on the word comment.
How do I find my way around the blog?
The articles (or 'posts') are displayed in chronological order. The best way to find your way around is to look at the topics menu on the right hand side of the page and click on the topic that interests you most. You will then see all the articles about that topic on your screen.
Is this a public website?
Yes. Anyone can find us by typing Dorking Deanery into google and anyone can comment on an article, so please do share it with people in your churches. However, only a few people will be able to write whole articles and the site will be closely monitored. I will be logging on regularly and removing any comments that are rude etc... If you see anything you don't like, please email dorkingdeanerywebmaster@gmail.com and I will address it as soon as possible.
